Description

Candied Orange Slices are a sweet and tangy treat with a chewy texture, perfect for garnishing cakes, decorating cocktails, or enjoying as a snack. With a glossy finish and vibrant citrus flavor, these easy-to-make treats are a stunning addition to your holiday desserts or a thoughtful homemade gift.

Ingredients

  • 4 fresh oranges (navel or Valencia work well)

  • 2 cups granulated sugar

  • 2 cups water

Optional Garnishes:

  • 4 oz dark or white chocolate (for dipping)

  • Extra sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Oranges:
Wash the oranges thoroughly to remove any wax or residue. Slice them into 1/8-inch thick rounds, discarding the ends and any seeds.

  • Blanch the Slices:
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the orange slices and blanch for 1-2 minutes to reduce bitterness.
Remove the slices and immediately transfer them to an ice bath to cool. Drain and set aside.

  • Make the Syrup:
In a large skillet or saucepan, combine sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio (e.g., 1 cup sugar to 1 cup water).
Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved.

  • Candy the Oranges:
Add the orange slices to the syrup in a single layer. Simmer over low heat for 45-60 minutes, flipping occasionally, until the peels become translucent and the syrup thickens.

  • Dry the Slices:
Carefully transfer the candied slices to a wire rack placed over parchment paper. Let them dry for 12-24 hours until they are no longer sticky.

  • Optional Garnishes:
For extra flavor and style, dip the dried slices halfway in melted chocolate or sprinkle with additional sugar to create a sparkling finish.

Notes

Spiced Syrup: Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, or star anise to the syrup for a festive twist.Chocolate-Dipped: Dip the dried slices in dark or white chocolate for an indulgent treat.Citrus Mix: Combine oranges, lemons, and limes for a colorful variety of candied fruits.Extra Sparkle: Toss the dried slices in granulated sugar for a crystallized finish.
